The Meaning of Nōtan (濃淡)
Originating in ancient Japanese ink-wash painting (Sumi-e), the term Nōtan translates literally as 濃 (nō = dense, dark, concentrated) and 淡 (tan = faint, light, dilute). Unlike Western chiaroscuro—which uses continuous gradients to sculpt illusory three-dimensional volumes—Notan evaluates the flat, graphic, structural equilibrium between light and darkness.
